Narcissism is a new word to describe an old phenomenon. A word that eludes to a sense of self-importance, the term wasn’t used regularly in our vocabulary until recent years. But it goes back to Genesis 3—where Adam and Eve grasp for the things they think they need. And we see it in the stories of leaders and kings throughout the Old Testament.
What does narcissism look like today—in your churches, homes, and relationships? Feelings of grandiosity and entitlement are just a few layers, but narcissism has more faces than we think.
Therapist and pastor Chuck DeGroat, who counsels ministry couples and writes extensively on the subject, talked with Ben and Lynley about the tendencies of pastors and church planters toward narcissism, why this is, and steps to help and healing for anyone who struggles with narcissism or has a toxic relationship with someone who does.
